Democracy as a Form of Government

Democracy is a regime in which everyone has equal rights to choose their governors, and it has been implemented since Ancient Greece. Especially after French Revolution that led to spread of nationalism to the whole world multinational states started to lose their power, and many of them collapsed in the aftermath of World Wars in the twentieth century. Then, new independent states were founded in the war-torn countries, and some of those that accept democracy as regime are governed by a republic. Nevertheless, this question has been left unanswered: ‘Is democracy really possible?’ I believe that democracy would be possible if certain conditions such as educated voters were satisfied.

First, democracy cannot be possible in countries where voters are uneducated. Education is one of the most important human rights, and it cannot be expected that people who do not exercise even their fundamental rights such as education can make a decision about governments. It could be argued that educated people know what democracy is, and what the role of the voter is, but uneducated people do not. In other words, being an elector requires education.

Those who disagree argue that all uneducated people who are voters are not ignorant, but that is not entirely true. The main point is that education is not related to going to university, it is related to having a world view. It is no wonder that many people who have an education may not be conscious of culture of democracy, while some people who are uneducated could have information about democracy; however, this case is not valid for a lot of people. Maybe one out of every ten people who are not educated has knowledge of democracy, but others not. If people who are uneducated vote, it will affect not only them bot also all people who live in the same country with them. As a result, if people did not learn how they could interpret the world, they should not vote in elections, too.

Taking everything into consideration, I firmly think that democracy is really possible under certain conditions. First of all, we should provide these conditions; thus we can reach the real democracy. Ancient Greeks realized direct democracy even in Ancient Age, why would we not realize representative democracy in this age?
